Each school teaches British Values as per the statutory guidance and also promotes their own set of values by ensuring that they permeate teaching, learning and all aspects of school life.
Promoting British Values
We align with the Department for Education’s guidance and the 2011 Prevent Strategy in fostering the five key British Values:
Democracy
Our democratically elected School Parliament ensures pupils’ voices are heard and their ideas help improve our school. Representatives from Key Stage 1 and 2 are chosen by their peers to discuss and address school-wide matters.
The Rule of Law
Students learn the importance of rules and laws, their role in protecting us, and the consequences of breaking them. Positive choices are celebrated, and participation in activities like sports teaches fairness and respect for rules.
Individual Liberty
We encourage pupils to make informed choices within a safe and supportive environment. Through assemblies, lessons, and activities, we teach critical thinking, human rights, and the value of personal freedom while prioritising their safety.
Mutual Respect
Respect is central to our school ethos. Through discussions, assemblies, and a robust reward system based on our house groups, we nurture high levels of respect amongst pupils and staff.
Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs
Our diverse community celebrates different cultures and faiths. Religious Education, PSHE lessons, and visits to places of worship help foster understanding and acceptance. We also invite speakers and theatre groups to highlight equality and cultural values.
By embedding these principles, Summerswood Primary School ensures a vibrant, inclusive, and supportive environment where every child thrives.
