Intent Statement
At Summerswood Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that all children, including disadvantaged pupils, are fully prepared for secondary school by the end of Year 6. Our goal is for every pupil to be confident in everyday mathematics, able to solve problems effectively, and willing to challenge themselves in their learning.
At Summerswood, we follow the White Rose Maths framework to plan and deliver daily maths lessons. This approach emphasizes mathematical fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving. Pupils engage in daily lessons that build core skills and provide opportunities to apply their understanding through diverse activities, including self-selected tasks where appropriate.
The White Rose Maths framework integrates the Concrete, Pictorial, and Abstract (CPA) approach, ensuring a deep understanding of mathematical concepts:
Concrete Manipulatives
Pupils use hands-on resources such as counters, multilink cubes, and place value counters to explore and understand mathematical ideas through physical manipulation.
Pictorial Representations
These visual aids help children bridge the gap between concrete and abstract thinking. Examples include drawings of Dienes blocks or tens frames to represent mathematical concepts.
Abstract Notation
Once concepts are well understood, pupils progress to recording their mathematical thinking using compact methods, such as long and short multiplication or division. Expanded methods are introduced to make intermediate steps explicit before transitioning to more formal approaches.
This structured progression ensures all children develop the confidence and skills to excel in mathematics and beyond.
At Summerswood Primary School we use Times Table Rock Stars both in school and at home. This is an online tool that helps the children to practice their times tables and develop their fluency with each times table. The children should be taking the 'little and often' approach, when using TTRS at home. They should be completing at least 3 minutes each day at home.
For more information to support you with using this as home please see the parent information letter below.
