Physical Education at Summerswood

Intent Statement

At Summerswood, our Physical Education curriculum is designed to encourage every child to develop a love for movement, physical activity, and healthy living. We aim to provide students with the opportunity to engage in a variety of sports and physical activities that promote teamwork, fitness, and overall well-being. Our goal is to nurture each child's confidence, physical skills, and understanding of the importance of leading an active lifestyle. Through fun and inclusive lessons, we support children in building the foundation for a lifelong passion for staying active and healthy.

It is our aim to provide all children with high quality PE and sports provision.  We want all children to succeed and achieve their full potential, lead a physically active lifestyle, and make healthy life choices. To help achieve these goals staff undergo regular CPD with the Sports Lead including team teaching lessons.

In order to raise attainment and accelerate progress in PE, we provide children with a wide range of physical activities that promote a healthy body and mind.  These include:

  • Two hours of PE per week (one indoor and one outdoor activity - Year 4 Autumn and Spring Term is swimming and Year 3 in the Summer Term will go swimming)
  • Daily Mile incorporated into our afternoons.
  • Gross and Fine Motor Skills Groups with selected children to work on balance, coordination and spatial awareness.

All children are assessed throughout the half term in the sport they are participating in.  Progress can therefore be monitored and progression/next steps can be planned.

In the Early Years, physical development is woven into the daily routine.  A variety of activities are available both indoors and outdoors for children to develop movement, handling of objects, understanding of own body, health and self-care.

There are also lots of opportunities for competition both in school and against other schools in the area. Children are trained by the PE Lead for these competitions and it gives them real insight into competitive sport.

As a school that loves physical education, we do not just look at the physical side but the leadership side too which is why there are opportunities for children to become playground leaders when they reach Years 5/6
