Intent Statement

Children have a natural curiosity and confidence to explore other countries, cultures and languages.

We all live in a multi-lingual society where it is a valuable skill to be able to communicate effectively with others in another language.

At Summerswood Primary School, we believe that learning a foreign language is a necessary part of being a member of a multi-cultural society and provides an opening to other cultures. That is why we intend to give a foreign language education that will foster our pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world.

At Summerswood Primary School, children have weekly lessons in French throughout Key Stage 2, using the Language Angels programme of study in addition to other resources.

We follow the aims of the National Curriculum for languages and our children are given the opportunities to:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding
  • explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes, and link the spelling, sound and meaning of words
  • engage in conversations; ask and answer questions; express opinions and respond to those of others; seek clarification and help
  • develop accurate pronunciation and intonation so that others understand when they are reading aloud or using familiar words and phrases; speak in sentences; use familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures
  • read and show understanding of words and phrases, and
  • understand basic grammar appropriate to the language being studied
